Newcastle Airport to the city centre: your options compared

Published 4 October 2026 by City Wheels.

Newcastle Airport is about six miles north-west of the city centre, so the journey is short. Which way is best depends on what you are carrying, where you are going and when you arrive.

The Tyne and Wear Metro

The Metro has a station at the airport and runs into Newcastle city centre. For a solo traveller with light luggage heading to a central address it is a simple option. It is less convenient with heavy cases, with children, or when your destination is not near a Metro station.

A pre-booked car

A pre-booked transfer takes you from arrivals to your front door with your luggage in the boot. You give us your flight number, we track the flight, and your driver is there when you land. The price is fixed before you travel, so you know the total in advance. It also works when the Metro doesn't: very early flights, late arrivals, and destinations beyond the Metro such as Northumberland, County Durham and Teesside.

How to choose

  • Light luggage and a central destination: the Metro is a simple choice.
  • Heavy luggage, children or a group: a pre-booked car is easier.
  • Early or late flights: a pre-booked car is waiting when you need it.
  • A destination outside Newcastle: a pre-booked car goes straight there.

If a pre-booked car suits your journey, enter your pickup and destination in the booking form to see the fixed price. For airport runs we recommend at least 12 hours' notice.
